Hollywood Reacts After Trump’s Bitter Rant Following the Death of Rob Reiner and His Wife

Donald Trump has never been known for restraint—and even tragedy didn’t soften his tone this time. Following the shocking murder of legendary Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, the president launched into a blistering public attack that quickly ignited outrage across Hollywood and beyond.

Rob Reiner and Michele were found dead inside their Brentwood, Los Angeles home on Sunday. Later that night, police arrested their son, Nick Reiner, on suspicion of murder. The news sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and political circles alike.

Reiner was far more than a filmmaker. Celebrated for his work in cinema, he was also deeply engaged in politics. According to the Los Angeles Times, he was regarded as a “political force” and a Democratic activist who went well beyond the typical celebrity fundraiser role. His advocacy focused heavily on causes such as early childhood education and marriage equality. Notably, Reiner co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which played a central role in overturning California’s Proposition 8—the 2008 ballot measure banning same-sex marriage.

Despite the gravity of the moment, President Trump’s response stunned many. On Monday, he addressed Reiner’s death on Truth Social with a lengthy and caustic post.

“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood,” Trump wrote, before launching into a tirade that labeled Reiner as “tortured and struggling” and blamed what he called an “incurable affliction” known as “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” He went on to claim Reiner’s criticism of him had driven people “CRAZY,” ending the message with a curt, “May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”

The rhetoric didn’t stop there. When questioned by reporters, Trump doubled down, saying, “I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all, in any way, shape, or form. I thought he was very bad for our country.”

The backlash was immediate and fierce.

Celebrities from across the political spectrum condemned the president’s remarks, calling them cruel and inappropriate given the circumstances. Patrick Schwarzenegger took to X with a blunt response: “What a disgusting and vile statement.”

Whoopi Goldberg also weighed in, expressing disbelief. “I don’t understand the man in the White House,” she told Deadline. “Have you no shame? No shame at all? Can you get any lower? I don’t think so.”

British broadcaster Piers Morgan urged Trump to reconsider, writing, “This is a dreadful thing to say about a man who just got murdered by his troubled son. Delete it, Mr President.”

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel delivered one of the harshest critiques. On his show, he described the moment as emblematic of a broader failure of leadership.

“In times like this, what we need is compassion and leadership,” Kimmel said. “We didn’t get that. Instead, we got a fool rambling about nonsense.”

He continued, criticizing what he saw as selective empathy and hollow condolences. “We got a brief moment of condolence followed by a ‘thing happened’—for students, for Rob and Michele Reiner. That tells you everything.”

Trump’s comments have once again reignited debate over tone, empathy, and the role of leadership in moments of national grief.
