The Obama family has shared heartbreaking news — Marian Robinson, the mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama and a cherished figure in the Obama household, has passed away at the age of 86.
Robinson became a quiet but steadfast presence in the White House after moving from her lifelong home in Chicago to Washington, D.C., when Barack Obama became president in 2009. Known affectionately as “First Grandma,” she stepped into a vital role — caring for her granddaughters, Malia and Sasha, and grounding the family amid the whirlwind of political life.
In a statement released to NBC News, the family wrote, “She left us peacefully this morning. None of us quite know how to move forward without her.” The message was signed by her children, Craig and Michelle, their spouses, Kelly and Barack, and her grandchildren Avery, Leslie, Austin, Aaron, Malia, and Sasha.
Marian Robinson’s life took a dramatic turn when her son-in-law’s election victory in 2008 thrust her into the public eye. In a CBS interview years ago, Robinson reflected on her decision to move to Washington: “I knew this was going to be a hard life for them — for both Michelle and Barack. And I worried about my granddaughters’ safety. That’s what made me go.”
