The city of Hays, Kansas, is reeling after the tragic loss of Police Sgt. Scott Heimann, 32, who was killed while responding to a domestic violence incident that escalated into a deadly standoff over the weekend.
Just before midnight on Saturday, officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of East 21st Street after a woman reported fleeing a violent confrontation with her partner, 34-year-old Zane Wickham. She told authorities that Wickham rammed his truck into her car as she tried to get away before she sought refuge at a nearby home.
By the early hours of Sunday morning, Hays police officers and a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper had surrounded Wickham’s residence in the 2200 block of Downing Avenue. At about 1:55 a.m., a gunshot fired from inside the home struck Sgt. Heimann. Despite immediate medical aid at the scene and emergency transport, he later died at a Hutchinson hospital.
Hours later, at around 6:15 a.m., tactical teams entered the residence and discovered Wickham dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A Career of Dedication
Sgt. Heimann joined the Hays Police Department in 2016 and quickly became known for his leadership, professionalism, and deep commitment to the people he served.
“We are painfully reminded that law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to protect others,” Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler said in a statement. “Sgt. Scott Heimann made the ultimate sacrifice, embodying the very spirit of service and dedication to his community.”
Honoring His Life
The community will soon come together to pay respects. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4–8 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, followed by a vigil service at 6:30 p.m.
As preparations are made, the people of Hays are left balancing grief with gratitude—mourning a devoted officer lost too soon, while remembering him as a protector who gave everything in the line of duty.
