Tragedy in Grand Blanc: Church Attack Leaves Four Dead, Community Searching for Answers

What was meant to be a quiet Sunday of prayer in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, turned into chaos when violence erupted inside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. On September 28, 2025, worshippers were caught in horror as a man rammed a truck into the church, opened fire on those inside, and set the building ablaze.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, a Burton resident and former U.S. Marine. Neighbors and church members say they are stunned that someone with his background could commit such a violent act.

Officials confirmed four people lost their lives—two from gunshot wounds and two more discovered after the fire. At least eight others were injured, among them children, with one victim still in critical condition. Investigators warned the number of casualties could rise as the search of the burned structure continues.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of fear and desperation as congregants tried to escape. Paula, a longtime member of the congregation, said, “I didn’t know if we were going to make it out.” The church itself has been deemed a total loss.

Sanford’s past adds to the mystery surrounding the tragedy. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2004 to 2008, completing combat tours in Iraq and receiving multiple commendations. Police are now combing through his home and digital records in search of a motive, though so far, no clear explanation has emerged.

National leaders have responded swiftly. President Donald Trump condemned the incident as “yet another targeted attack on Christians” and announced that the FBI is leading the investigation alongside local authorities. Attorney General Pamela Bondi and Vice President JD Vance urged unity and support for the grieving community.

As Grand Blanc mourns the lives lost and the destruction of a sacred gathering place, investigators continue piecing together what drove a decorated veteran to unleash such devastation.
