More than two months have passed since the tragic shootout that shook the quiet farming town of Phillipsburg, Kansas. Yet the loss of Deputy Brandon Gaede — a young father of three and a devoted officer — is still deeply felt by the community he served with courage until his final moments.

A Deadly Confrontation
On June 27, 2025, Phillipsburg deputies were called to investigate reports of illegal fireworks. Deputy Gaede, 30, responded to the scene at 899 1st Street. While attempting to arrest 27-year-old Kolton Griffith, a violent struggle erupted.
Griffith pulled out a hidden handgun and opened fire, striking Gaede. Despite being critically wounded, the deputy returned fire, hitting Griffith several times. Griffith died at the scene. Gaede was rushed to the hospital, but tragically passed away later that night at 10:24 p.m.
A Career of Service
Gaede’s path to law enforcement began after graduating from Colby High School in 2013 and earning an associate degree from Colby Community College in 2015. His first role was as a jailer in Thomas County before joining the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office in 2017.
In July 2024, his dedication and leadership earned him a promotion to undersheriff, though he was serving as deputy at the time of his death.
Family and Community in Mourning
Gaede leaves behind his wife and three young children, who have been surrounded with overwhelming community support. Farmers State Bank in Phillipsburg quickly opened a donation account to help the family — a fund that continues to receive contributions as neighbors rally around them.
“Brandon gave everything for his community,” one resident shared on Facebook. “We will never forget his sacrifice.”
A Legacy of Bravery
The tragedy left a lasting mark on Phillipsburg. Deputy Gaede’s final act of bravery — returning fire despite his wounds to protect others — has become a symbol of selfless service.
“Deputy Gaede died a hero,” a neighbor said. “Even two months later, he continues to protect this town through the memory of his courage.”
