Mary Lou Retton, the Olympic gymnastics icon and proud daughter of West Virginia, is in a critical fight against pneumonia that has placed her in intensive care. The beloved gold medalist, who inspired a generation with her grit and talent, is now battling for survival and in need of prayers and support from fans nationwide.
The difficult update was shared by her daughter, McKenna Kelley, who revealed that Retton has been in the ICU for more than a week and is unable to breathe without medical assistance. Out of respect for her mother’s privacy, Kelley has limited the details she disclosed, but she did make one sobering admission—Retton is uninsured.
To rally support, Kelley set up a spotfund campaign, explaining the family’s situation and appealing for both financial help and continued prayers. On Instagram, she wrote, “Please consider helping our family out, and most importantly, please continue to pray.”
Retton’s story has always been one of perseverance. Born and raised in Fairmont, West Virginia, she stunned the world during the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Just weeks after knee surgery, she delivered flawless performances, earning perfect 10s on the vault and floor exercise. Her incredible comeback secured her place in history as the first American to win the all-around Olympic gold in gymnastics. That same year, she also took home two silver medals and two bronze, making her the most decorated gymnast of the Games.
Her accomplishments extended beyond gymnastics. Retton became a familiar face on television, appearing in productions like Scrooged, Baywatch, and Knots Landing. She also served on the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under President George W. Bush, further cementing her role as an ambassador for health and athletics.
Back home in Fairmont, her legacy is proudly honored with a road and park named after her. Today, as her family and supporters rally behind her, the flood of prayers, donations, and heartfelt messages reflect the deep admiration for an athlete who broke barriers, inspired countless fans, and continues to embody resilience in the face of adversity.
