Fulton County Officer Honored After Brave Actions in Deadly Shootout

A Fulton County police corporal who was shot during an April gunfight is being celebrated for his heroic actions that saved a fellow officer’s life in the middle of chaos.

Gunfire on Fulton Industrial Boulevard
On April 18, Corporal Zahir Muid approached a man jaywalking along Fulton Industrial Boulevard. South Fulton Police Lt. Charles Cook soon stopped to assist. During the encounter, officers learned the man—later identified as Rashan Cofield—was wanted on an active warrant.

As they tried to make the arrest, Cofield pulled a handgun and opened fire while attempting to escape. In the shootout, Lt. Cook was struck in the arm, severing a major artery. Despite being wounded himself, Cpl. Muid rushed to his colleague’s side, improvised a tourniquet, and applied it quickly—an action doctors later said saved Cook’s life.

Courage Recognized
Cofield was killed in the exchange of gunfire, but Muid’s fast response left a lasting impact.

On September 3, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners officially declared “Corporal Zahir Muid Appreciation Day.” Just weeks earlier, on August 20, Muid was named the 2025 Officer of the Year by ASIS International, a global organization of security professionals.

Officials praised Muid’s bravery, saying his actions highlight the importance of police training and his determination to ensure his partner didn’t lose his life on the street that day.
