Tragedy struck Liberty, Texas, during the devastating flash floods that have claimed the lives of over 100 people and left many still unaccounted for. Among the most gut-wrenching accounts is that of John Burges, a devoted father who was carried away by raging floodwaters while holding his two young sons tightly in his arms.
According to eyewitnesses, Burges ignored repeated calls from rescuers to release the boys and save himself—he wouldn’t let go. His wife, Julia, and the two boys are still missing. Their daughter, who had been attending a nearby summer camp at the time, survived the storm.
The Burges family had been spending the Fourth of July weekend at the Blue Oak RV Park in Kerr County. Lorena Guillen, who owns the park, described a chaotic and terrifying night as the river swelled with alarming speed. She recalled hearing terrified screams pierce the darkness as water surged through, lifting cabins and sweeping them away.
Not far from the park, Camp Mystic suffered similar devastation. The camp reported that 27 campers and staff members have died, and at least 11 more are still missing. Dick Eastland, the beloved director of the camp, lost his life while attempting to protect the children under his care.
As search teams continue combing through the wreckage, communities across Texas are left reeling. The flood has left a permanent mark on families, rescuers, and residents, who are now left to grieve those lost and honor those who showed unimaginable bravery in the face of disaster.
