House Approves Bill Targeting Undocumented Migrants Who Assault Police; GOP Gains Ground on Economy

In a significant move from the Republican-led House of Representatives, lawmakers have passed a bill requiring the deportation of any undocumented immigrant found guilty of assaulting a law enforcement officer—a decision that saw some bipartisan support despite strong resistance from most Democrats.

The measure, called the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act, passed with a vote of 265 to 148. Notably, 54 Democrats crossed party lines to vote in favor of the bill, which was introduced by Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.).

“There’s no excuse for someone who is here illegally and attacks a police officer to stay in our country,” Van Drew said. “Such actions show a complete lack of respect for our laws and institutions, and those individuals are not the kind of people who help our society thrive.”

The bill instructs federal authorities to detain undocumented individuals accused of assaulting officers until deportation is carried out. It also establishes a new legal category that would make such individuals inadmissible to the United States in the future.

Following the vote, House Majority Whip Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) criticized Democrats who voted against the measure, stating, “Once again, the Democrat Party puts violent illegal immigrants ahead of the brave men and women in uniform. They’ve proven to be the most anti-law enforcement party in history.”

Meanwhile, a new CNN poll has drawn attention to another concern for Democrats: their slipping advantage on economic issues.

Despite efforts by Democratic leaders and media outlets to raise alarms over former President Trump’s proposed tariffs and potential market instability, polling data tells a different story. CNN data analyst Harry Enten expressed surprise at the resilience of Republican messaging on economic policy.

“In the early months of Trump’s presidency, you’d expect Democrats to have a strong lead on the economy after all the criticism,” Enten told CNN’s Kate Bolduan. “But that’s not what we’re seeing. Back in November 2023, Republicans held an 11-point lead. That margin still holds steady—currently around eight points.”

Enten pointed to multiple polls showing consistent Republican strength on economic matters. “Even with months of recession fears, market fluctuations, and unpopular tariffs, Democrats are still trailing significantly,” he said.

He added that recent polling from Reuters/IPSOS paints an even starker picture. “In May 2024, Republicans led by nine points. A year later, in May 2025, that lead has grown to 12 points. This underscores the challenges Democrats are facing when it comes to economic credibility.”

Despite fluctuations in Trump’s approval ratings, the GOP’s consistent edge on the economy remains a significant factor heading into the next election cycle.
