Brandon Gill, a newly elected Republican congressman from Texas, has ignited controversy by calling for Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar to be deported back to Somalia. Gill shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) showing Omar advising Somali immigrants in the U.S. on how to handle encounters with immigration authorities. Alongside the clip, he wrote, “America would be a better place if @IlhanMN were sent back to Somalia,” a statement that quickly polarized reactions online.
The footage, originally shared by conservative commentator Greg Price, captures Omar instructing Somali immigrants on their rights during immigration enforcement actions. She advises them not to disclose personal details such as their name, immigration status, or entry method, and to mention having legal counsel when questioned. Many of Gill’s supporters viewed this as encouraging illegal behavior and demanded investigations and her removal from office.
Gill didn’t stop there, insisting Omar should have never been allowed into the country. His spokesperson echoed this harsh stance, accusing her of prioritizing undocumented immigrants over American citizens. The spokesperson called it unacceptable for a member of Congress to appear to assist in avoiding immigration laws.
This dispute arises as the Trump administration prepares to ramp up immigration enforcement. Incoming “border czar” Tom Homan has stated ICE will prioritize criminals but that all undocumented immigrants face arrest risk. He warned sanctuary cities would see a surge in related arrests during these crackdowns.
In a tense CNN interview with Kaitlan Collins, Homan defended the administration’s tough stance. When asked about ICE operations near schools or churches, he said individuals with criminal ties should be wary, emphasizing national security concerns would override location sensitivities.
