New Jersey Democratic Representative LaMonica McIver appeared before a judge on Wednesday following federal charges related to an alleged assault on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
The 38-year-old congresswoman attended the hearing remotely from Washington, D.C., where the court imposed strict conditions on her release. She has been ordered to turn in any firearms she owns and is restricted from traveling abroad unless it’s for official government business—pending approval and advance notice to authorities. Her next court date is set for June 11.
If found guilty, McIver could spend up to eight years behind bars and face a fine reaching $250,000.
Despite the serious nature of the allegations, McIver is reportedly using the charges to galvanize support, claiming the case is racially driven. Fox News noted that she has launched a fundraising campaign to counter what she calls a politically and racially motivated prosecution.
The New York Post confirmed that McIver was informed of her legal rights during the hearing and released without bail while she awaits further proceedings.
