Hollywood legend Robert De Niro made waves at this year’s Cannes Film Festival — not just for receiving one of the industry’s highest honors, but for unleashing a pointed critique of former U.S. President Donald Trump during his acceptance speech.
The 87-year-old star, widely celebrated for his decades-spanning career in film, was awarded the honorary Palme d’Or on May 13, 2025, at the opening ceremony of the 78th edition of the prestigious festival. But instead of simply basking in the spotlight, De Niro used the moment to speak out — and didn’t mince words.
Walking the red carpet with 45-year-old girlfriend Tiffany Chen and his daughter Helen Grace, De Niro looked every bit the icon he is. Leonardo DiCaprio, his co-star and longtime friend, presented the award — a nod to their shared history, as De Niro had once served as Jury President at Cannes in 2011.
When he took the stage, De Niro used his platform to take aim at Trump and what he described as dangerous shifts in U.S. politics.
“In my country, we’re battling like hell to protect the democracy we once thought was secure,” he said, drawing a direct connection between freedom of expression and the arts. “That matters here too — because creativity thrives in democracy.”
The “Raging Bull” actor criticized Trump’s leadership, specifically calling out his role at the Kennedy Center and recent policy decisions.
“Trump — a president with no appreciation for culture — now sits at the helm of one of our top arts institutions,” De Niro said. He went on to slam Trump’s newly announced 100% tariff on foreign-made films and cuts to arts and education programs. “Let that sink in,” he told the audience.
His message was clear: this isn’t just America’s problem. “What’s happening affects the entire world,” he warned. “We can’t just watch from the sidelines like an audience at the movies. We need to act — peacefully, but with urgency and conviction.”
De Niro’s fiery remarks lit up social media. On platforms like YouTube and TikTok, reactions ranged from praise to disbelief. “A true American who cares about global freedom,” one user commented. Another called it “a courageous and important speech.”
