Donald Trump has once again found himself at the center of controversy — this time over his conduct at the funeral of Pope Francis this past weekend.
As global leaders, dignitaries, and members of royalty gathered at St. Peter’s Basilica and Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica in Rome to pay their final respects to the late pope — who passed away at 88 following a stroke and heart complications — Trump’s behavior became a major talking point online.
More than 200,000 mourners filled St. Peter’s Square to honor Pope Francis, whose forward-thinking leadership had endeared him to millions around the world. Despite the somber nature of the event, Trump became a flashpoint for criticism.
Accompanied by former First Lady Melania Trump, Trump immediately drew attention upon arrival. While most attendees honored Catholic funeral traditions by wearing all-black attire, Trump wore a navy blue suit with a bright blue tie. Although Prince William was also seen in dark blue, many on social media viewed Trump’s outfit as inappropriate and attention-seeking.
But the backlash didn’t stop with his choice of clothing. During the service, Trump was seen stepping onto the carpet surrounding Pope Francis’s coffin — an area regarded as sacred and typically left untouched out of respect. While most dignitaries carefully avoided stepping on it, both Trump and Melania were photographed crossing over, leading to further outrage.
Observers also criticized Trump’s behavior throughout the service. Cameras captured him appearing to chew gum, using his cellphone during the ceremony, and even seemingly nodding off with his mouth open at one point. Clips of these moments spread rapidly online, with many accusing the former president of showing a lack of respect.
Social media reactions were swift and harsh. One user wrote, “Trump at the Pope’s funeral. No black suit, slouched over and asleep! Absolutely disgraceful.” Another posted, “Leave it to Trump to be the only clown in a blue suit and tie at a funeral. Total embarrassment.”
Some critics even argued that Trump’s presence at the funeral was less about mourning and more about political optics, suggesting he was trying to appeal to Catholic voters.
Although a handful of defenders pointed out that other leaders had also chosen navy suits, the overwhelming response expressed disappointment at Trump’s handling of such a solemn occasion.
In a moment meant to be marked by dignity and deep respect, many were left wondering if Trump failed to understand the gravity of the event—or worse, if he simply didn’t care.
What do you think? Was Trump truly disrespectful at Pope Francis’s funeral, or are critics making too much of the situation?
